John Rae Wins 1st Place in SDN 2017 Contest!

SDN is thrilled to present the winners of our recent Call for Entries, Celebrating the Global Community. The judges selected one first-place winner and four honorable mentions. The work submitted was outstanding and a clear demonstration of the commitment and interest in documentary photography and visual storytelling. The first place winner is John Rae from the US for his project The Positive Community, documenting people living with AIDS around the world and how HIV/AIDS, no longer a death sentence but a manageable disease with proper treatment, is still not without its struggles. The Positive Community will be featured in the upcoming issue of ZEKE magazine.

John Rae Winner in 2017 Px3 Contest!

France’s Px3 has announced the winners of it’s 2017 contest and John has won Silver in the Annual Report category.  The award was taken by photography produced in India on assignment for Accion, a Boston based NGO that promotes financial inclusion worldwide. View the gallery here.

John Winner in International Color Awards 2017 Contest

The ICA has announced the winners of it’s 10th annual Photo Contest and John Rae has won 2nd place in the Portrait Category.  In addition John has been awarded an Honorable Mention also in the Portrait Category.  The winning photograph was made in Lagos, Nigeria on assignment for Accion, a Boston based NGO that promotes financial inclusion in over 40 countries with 90 partners.

JR Photo Story Goes Viral 14M Views

The Guardian has picked up a photo story on Mobile TB clinics in Yangon, Myanmar produced by John on assignment for UNOPS.  Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death for people aged 15-49 in Myanmar.  The cost of reaching a hospital for diagnosis and treatment is prohibitive for many in Yangon. This program brings the hospital to the patients. To date the number of views has topped 14 Million. View the gallery here.

John Wins Gold, Silver, and Bronze in Px3 Photo Contest!

Px3 has announced the winners of it’s 10th annual Photo Contest and John has won Gold, Silver, and Bronze in the Annual Report category. The PX3 contest is one of the largest and most prestigious contests in Europe with tens of thousands entries from 90 countries.  The Gold Medal winning series of photographs were produced in South Korea for Gener8 Maritime. The Silver Medal photos were produced on assignment for Health and Hospitals, the branch of the New York City Government that runs the public hospitals. The Bronze Medal went to a series of photographs produced on assignment for The Accion, a Boston based NGO, in Myanmar that features a series of photographs depicting the org’s efforts to promote financial inclusion around the world.

Communication Arts has announced the winners of it’s 2016 Photo Contest and John Rae has won in the Annual Report category for his series of photographs entitled “Building the Supertanker”. The winning series was produced on assignment for Gener8 Maritime at the DSME shipyard in South Korea. The Communication Arts Photo Contest is one of the most prestigious photo contests in the US attracting tens of thousands of entries from all over the world.

John Rae Winner in IPA 2015 Contest

The International Photography Awards announced the winners of its 13th photo contest and John Rae has taken 3rd place in the Social Cause Section. The winning photographs were chosen from over 27,000 entries from over 104 countries. The photos are part of an ongoing project to document The Global Fund’s efforts to fight HIV around the world and are from Zambia, Laos, Paraguay, The Gambia and Myanmar.

Communication Arts announced the winners of its 2015 photo contest and John Rae has been named a winner in the Annual Report category. CA photo contest attracts thousands of entries from around the world and is one of the oldest and most prestigious contests in America. The winning photograph is from Honduras of a young mother holding her newborn child. She is also a recovering TB patient. The WHO reports that of the 9 million new cases of TB in 2013 1.5 million did not survive. The photo was made on assignment for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria in January 2015.

AP 30 Photo Contest Winner

John Rae Photography Winner in AP 30 Photo Contest

American Photographer has announced the winners of the AP 30 Photo Contest . AP is one of the most prestigious Photo Contests in the US. The winning photograph was chosen from tens of thousands of entries from over 80 countries. The photo was shot on assignment for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria in Cape Town’s infamous Pollsmoor Prison. Prisons are wonderful incubators of TB and AIDS and the GF supports efforts to fight the two pandemics in prisons around the world.
